Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Simshauser, Walter and Barbara Endowment for Engineering Research
The Walter and Barbara Simshauser Endowment for Engineering Research was established in 2025 by Walter and Barbara Simshauser, to be funded through lifetime and estate gifts.
Mr. Walter Simshauser is a 1964 graduate of Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, earning a degree in electrical engineering. While studying at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, Mr. Simshauser became a brother of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He later obtained a master's degree from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Mrs. Barbara (Deaver) Simshauser is a 1962 graduate of Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, earning her degree in secondary education, home economics. Mrs. Simshauser joined the Theta Phi Alpha sorority during her time at UA. She later received a master's degree from Troy State University.
Walter and Barbara met at UA and spent the majority of their married life in Florida. Together, they lived for many years in the Fort Walton Beach area, where Walter worked with the U.S. Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base. Walter then accepted a position overseas at SHAPE Technical Center, Allied Powers Europe, where they remained for three years. After that, Walt transitioned to Raytheon located in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he and Barbara eventually retired.
Walter and Barbara understand that research is a cornerstone of engineering, driving innovations that enhance infrastructure, sustainability, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Additionally, they recognize that a strong foundation for research - at the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty levels - enhances the University's ability to attract and retain top-tier faculty who are leaders in their fields. This, in turn, draws talented students seeking hands-on experience with groundbreaking projects, fostering an environment of discovery and advancement.
In recognition of the importance of research in the field of engineering and engineering education, The Walter and Barbara Simshauser Endowment for Engineering Research ensures sustained investment in impactful research initiatives in engineering. Funds shall be awarded at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science, or his/her designee, to support and enhance research endeavors in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science. Without limiting the Dean's discretion, these funds may be used for the purchase of necessary equipment, compensation for student research assistants, reimbursement of travel expenses, faculty administrative stipends, and other general support for engineering research initiatives.
