Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Patterson, Margaret and Jeffrey Excellence Honors Scholarship

The Margaret and Jeffrey Patterson Excellence Honors Scholarship (formerly The Margaret and Jeffrey Patterson Inclusive Excellence Honors Scholarship) was established in 2012 and revised in 2026.

Jeffrey Patterson earned a master's degree in Polymer Science from Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK in 1987, and Margaret Patterson earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Dayton in 1984. Both built successful careers in the chemical industry, holding technical and managerial roles, and have seen firsthand how critical a college degree is for long-term career development.

Margaret, a first-generation college student who funded 100 percent of her own education, understands the challenges that students with financial need face. Her experience, combined with their shared belief that many outstanding students require financial support to achieve their full potential, inspired the creation of this scholarship.

The Pattersons also support the Williams Honors College and its commitment to providing an enriching on-campus living and learning experience.

The Margaret and Jeffrey Patterson Excellence Honors Scholarship is awarded to students entering their freshman year in the Williams Honors College who will reside in on-campus housing at Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need and come from a family in which no parent or legal guardian has completed formal education beyond a high school diploma. Recipients must also have graduated from a public high school in one of the following Ohio counties: Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, Montgomery, or Summit.

The scholarship provides funding for tuition and fees. Additionally, a $5,000 annual allowance for on-campus room and board expenses will be awarded as funds are available. It is renewable for up to eight full-time semesters, provided the recipient remains in good standing with the Williams Honors College.

Funds used for purposes other than qualified educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient.

Recipients are selected by Â鶹ÊÓƵAPK Scholarship Committee within the Office of Student Financial Aid, with recommendations provided by the Dean of the Williams Honors College.
